This book was non the story of one primary character and was instead the story of many individual characters: Mavis, Rose, Henry, and Mr Duffy. Each of these characters played such an important office within the story that it would non exist the same with any one of them removed.

Overall, a very enjoyable read and I will be looking for more written past Barbara O'Connor in the future.

I had the opportunity to read an avant-garde copy of this middle grade fiction novel both through my #BookRelays group and NetGalley. I've been very excited nearly reading it always since I read Barbara O'Connor's book, Wish! I actually enjoyed reading this story of friendship, people's abilities to grow in positive ways, and the realization that people are multidimensional – no 1 is all good or all bad in existent life.
We learn all of these awesome lessons through the story of Mavis Jeeter, Rose Tully, Mr. Duffy, and Henry. Mavis has moved many times in her life, as her mother frequently changes jobs and/or relationships. When Mavis' mom gets a new job every bit a housekeeper in the Tully household, she and Mavis motility into a small flat over the family unit's garage. Mavis, who has never had a all-time friend, rapidly informs Rose Tully that they will be best friends. Rose, who has been lonesome always since her older sister went off to higher, is glad to have a new friend. Merely it soon becomes clear that these two girls are very unlike from each other.
Rose is very reserved, soft-spoken, and very reluctant to break any of the rules set by her rigid mother. Mavis is more than of a costless spirit who speaks her mind, often without thinking through the consequences. When the ii of them try to assist lonely Mr. Duffy, the gatekeeper of the upscale customs where they alive, by finding him a new dog to replace the beloved pet that passed abroad, there are a number of rules that demand to be broken.
Rose learns to relax a little bit more and take risks. Mavis learns that sometimes she needs to be more patient in order to be a good best friend. Mr. Duffy and Henry, an escaped greyhound from the local dog track, also learn new lessons about trusting others and trying new things.
The character development in this story is corking. Everyone learns something and becomes better for information technology by the terminate of the story. I like that the characters are multidimensional. For example, Amanda is a chip of a snooty girl and somewhat of a nemesis in the story. However, she is kindhearted enough to give food to the devious canis familiaris and is generous enough to loan her bike to Mavis. It concerns me a petty bit that in gild for Rose to prove her friendship to Mavis, she feels pressured to break her mothers' rules. I know that kids oftentimes call up rules are lame, just Rose'due south mother had her rules in order to proceed Rose safe – especially the rules virtually staying away from the forest and the busy highway exterior the housing evolution. Merely this is a very real situation for center grade readers, every bit they are faced with this type of peer force per unit area all the fourth dimension. This might lead to a good opportunity to discuss with young readers whether someone should have to break rules in club to exist friends with someone.
This is a terrific heart school read with an engaging story. Anyone who has ever fallen in dearest with a devious animal will definitely be able to relate to this book. This book will be released in August and would be a good add-on to classroom libraries, grades four and up.

Mavis Jeeter and her mother have moved around a lot, mainly because her female parent is never happy with any of her jobs. It's hard on Mavis, who just really wants to stay in ane place and brand some friends. When the 2 move to Alabama so her mother can be the housekeeper for the Tullys, Mavis is superexcited. Not only do they have a overnice, if pocket-sized, apartment every bit function of the job, but there is a daughter, Rose, merely her own historic period. There'due south plenty to do in the gated community, including riding Rose'southward skateboard, talking to the gatekeeper, Mr. Duffy, and trying to corral a greyhound they find in the woods. They also take to deal with Amanda, who has an on-again-off-again friendship with Rose, and equally usual, Mavis' mother finds enough to mutter about with her task. Mr. Duffy is finding it hard to cope with his job later the death of his job, and Rose worries about him. Mavis is bound and determined that getting him a new canis familiaris will solve all of his bug. The canis familiaris they detect (and for whom Amanda has been caring!) is from a local dog racetrack, Wonderland. When they bring the dog to Mr. Duffy, he says the dog must exist returned, but this actually ends up helping things work out for everyone, in unexpected ways. How long will Mavis be able to stay in her current situation earlier her mother decides information technology is fourth dimension to move on?
Strengths: This reminded me a lot of Constance Greene's A Girl Called Al, but only in the plot line about Mr. Duffy, and it certainly ends in a MUCH happier way. I loved seeing both sides of the economic divide-- people who live in gated communities, and people who work for them. Mavis is a forcefulness of nature, and her optimism in the face of difficulties is refreshing. Rose's shyness and difficulty in dealing with her overbearing mother is interesting as well. It's fun to watch her break costless. Henry is a great dog, and the way his hereafter and Mr. Duffy's go entwined is very realistic. I was very glad at the terminate that Mavis' mother was able to adjust her outlook on life-- that doesn't happen frequently, and it was refreshing to see.
Weaknesses: I wish at that place had been a lot more data about Wonderland and greyhound rescue operations. As well, I am having a LOT of trouble getting my heed around the fact that people hire people do do their household chores. I know they still practise, but I just tin can't envision it!

What I actually think: I actually liked this, just I am debating if it might be likewise young for middle school. The friend dynamics are a bit more elementary. However, I might be able to get this one checked out because of the canis familiaris, but my 8th graders would definitely find it too immature.

Mavis Jeeter and her mom never stay in one place for a long time, which makes making friends challenging. At the beginning of the story, Mavis' mom accepts a chore as a housekeeper for the Tully family. Mavis desperately wants a true all-time friend and hopes she has constitute one in Rose, the Tully'south daughter. Like Mavis, Rose has never had a real best friend either. She does not like spending fourth dimension with the other girls who live in Magnolia Estates like Amanda Simm, for Amanda says mean things backside parents' backs and only cares almost going to the mall. Rose would rather spend time with Mr. Duffy, the Magnolia Estates gatekeeper although since his canis familiaris'south decease, Mr. Duffy is grumpy, forgetful, and very lonely.

Later on beingness introduced to Rose, believing and daring Mavis immediately tells Rose that she is her new best friend. Worrier Rose accepts the friendship but struggles with having the confidence to be every bit assuming as Mavis. Mavis is convinced that Mr. Duffy volition exist happy again if he go a new canis familiaris. So when she and Rose hear almost a stray canis familiaris named Henry living in the woods, Mavis hatches a program to catch Henry and requite him to Mr. Duffy. Of course, no program is not without its obstacles and dissimilar Mavis, Rose is apprehensive well-nigh everything from going into the woods to discover Henry to riding bikes outside of Magnolia Estates. And every time Mr. Duffy makes a mistake and Rose hears her mother complaining, she worries that he may be fired and leave her forever.

I just loved everything about Wonderland-the setting, characters, plot, the writing, and the message. Rose's friendship with Mavis was the goad helping her finding her ain voice, and it was amazing to see Rose'due south confidence abound. Mr. Duffy runs the gates of Magnolia Estates and is entering a very sad phase of his life. And then there is Henry who is a domestic dog escapee and isn't really sure what he wants. These four perspectives lend to an amazing story-telling feel.
The chapters, written from the perspective of either Mavis, Rose or Henry were quick to read and made the volume hard to put downwardly. I found myself quickly endeared to these characters for unlike reasons and wanted the best for each of them. And, I wanted to milk shake Mrs. Tully in each and every chapter!
Barbara O'Connor has a way of telling stories that makes you experience as though you are in that place scraping your legs on the bushes, feeling the skateboard wheels under your feet and racing to Wonderland. She is a magnificent writer who does not disappoint with this center class novel.

At the beginning of Wonderland, Mavis' mom has taken a new job equally housekeeper for the Tully family. And as luck would take it, the Tully family has a daughter who is the aforementioned historic period as Mavis!

Rose Tully is a shy worry wart who does seem to fit in anywhere. Her closest friend is Mr. Duffy, the gatekeeper of their community. Just after the loss of Mr. Duffy's beloved domestic dog, he is extremely depressed and unreliable. Thanks to the arrival of Mavis, the two girls can at present concoct and carry out their brilliant plans to brighten Mr. Duffy's spirits and hopefully even save his chore.

A peachy hazard awaits in this 1, for certain! While there was more than sadness than I anticipated, information technology was an important multi-layered story that will encourage discussion about family expectations, dependable friendships, aging, loss/grief, and income disparity. Having simply finished Kate DiCamillo's Louisiana's Way Home, there were several similarities that struck me; what is it about stories with tween southern girls as the main characters? And many who accept not lived in i place for a very long fourth dimension? And few with male parent figures?
Wonderland is a story of two well-written main characters, who have more in mutual past book's end than when information technology starts. It is too a story of contrasts: of Mavis, who has undoubtedly spent more time fending for herself and adapting to new situations, and Rose, who has largely been directed past her female parent. And, while there are some disappointments along the mode, readers tin feel situations where modify can exist a good affair.
My only wonder: Mavis's female parent's attitude must have to change somewhat to conform to her new role, only perhaps information technology is a event of the opportunity of a new first, and something she enjoys doing.

Turns out one sure-fire manner to get me to read (or even observe) a book is to put a greyhound in it. Mavis doesn't hold out much hope for her mother's new job as live-in cook and housekeeper in a gated community. That is, until she meets Rose, the daughter of her mother's new employer. Shy, rule- and duty-leap Rose is pretty much the exact contrary of adventurous, speak and act before thinking Mavis but their alone hearts call out to each other and concur to be best friends. Not that either of them has had much do at being best friends. And then there's Henry, a delinquent greyhound hoping for a better life. Book Pairings:
Another children's book featuring a greyhound is Adam Gidwitz's The Inquisitor's Tale.
If the friendship part of the story is what really appeals to you, try Kate DiCamillo's Raymie Nightingale.
